Our most unique offerings, the University Pathway Programs, allow qualifying students in grades 11 and 12 the opportunity to earn their Associate of Arts & Science degree (or up to 60 university credits) while still in high school. University Pathway Program students are also guaranteed admission to the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire and the University of Minnesota - Duluth after graduation.
Are you a beginner, fluent, or somewhere in between? In addition to our high school diploma, we offer multi-level EFL/ESL courses, which run alongside our high school curriculum. In this way, our students can receive the necessary English support to achieve their graduation requirements and post-secondary goals. Newly enrolled students' English abilities are scored upon their arrival.
We are situated on 96-acres overlooking the Flambeau River and proudly boast about the safety of NCA campus and the local community as a whole. Ladysmith (the largest "city" in Rusk County, Wisconsin) has a population of 3,100 and a crime rate that is 75% below the national average. While Ladysmith may be considered small, it is very close to larger cities that we visit for recreation and shopping.
North Cedar Academy is pleased to announce we have named Dr. Michael "Mike" Lovorn our new Headmaster and Executive Director. He will begin his role in April 2023. Dr. Lovorn has 30 years of experience in education. He taught middle and high school social studies for over a decade before earning a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Tennessee in 2003. Since then, he has worked in teacher education and international programs, offered graduate coursework to teachers in K-12 international schools on five continents, and recruited students to study in the United States. Over the past 20 years, Mike has also written extensively on teaching and learning in international contexts, historiographical analysis, and humor in the classroom.
A native Texan, "Mike," as he prefers to be called, grew up in Tennessee. He has lived and worked across the U.S. and abroad and traveled extensively for both work and pleasure, having taught and/or served as a guest lecturer in South Africa, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Qatar, Russia, and Ireland, among many other countries. He comes to us from Winona, Minnesota, where he was the Dean of the School of Education at Saint Mary's University.
When asked why he chose NCA, Mike replied: "It was clear from the moment I stepped onto campus that NCA is a unique and special place. The students and teachers here have built a real learning community; a stimulating-but-serene learning environment, much needed in today's world. I am pleased to join NCA and honored to lead our efforts to welcome students from around the world to study and grow with us in Northern Wisconsin. I'm very happy to be here."
