A native of Ohio, I took early graduation from high school and (at the age of 16) enrolled in the University of Akron, where I earned Bachelor’s Degrees in both Chemistry and Russian. During my undergraduate years, I worked in a graduate lab on a project to synthesize solid rocket fuel for the US government. In 1983, I moved to Wisconsin to work for TSR, Inc., producers of the Dungeons & Dragons game. In the early 90s, my love of science drove me back to school. I enrolled in a graduate program at Marquette University, where I performed research on chiral induction and synthesis of self-replicating molecules. During this time, I discovered a love of teaching and found ways to indulge that passion for many years thereafter—as a private tutor, online teacher, part-time college instructor, and company trainer—while working in the corporate world in the Milwaukee and later the Seattle areas. After moving back to Wisconsin, I spent a few years as a freelance editor and substitute teacher while completing my teaching certification in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. I then became a full-time high school science teacher with licenses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth & Space Science, and Broadfield Science.
I was the first teacher hired at NCA, and I built its science program from scratch, outfitting its new science lab when it was finished, and developing its entire science curriculum. While at NCA, I have developed and taught courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, Astronomy, Genetics, Geology, and Game Design. I also developed and manage the organic garden and the Game Club at NCA. I am known for my engaging, hands-on teaching style. I incorporate elements learned during my career in the game industry to enhance student learning. I pride myself on my ability to connect with students of all backgrounds.
In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, reading, puzzles, crafts, writing fiction for publication, and spending time with my husband and our pride of unruly house cats.
