Kathy Ducommun

English Instructor

My parents moved our family to Ladysmith from a west suburb of Chicago when I was 12. I’ve lived here most of my life, except for seven years when I was in graduate school at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale. After leaving graduate school, I came back to Ladysmith to teach at Mount Senario College (now North Cedar Academy), until it closed in 2002. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English from Mount Senario College, and a Master of Arts in English and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition with minors in Medieval and Renaissance Literature from SIUC. I’ve taught English for close to thirty years and was an administrator at Mount Senario College – Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs and later Acting President of Mount Senario College until it closed.

I taught at the University of Wisconsin – Marathon County for about five years and then was approached by NCA to teach English. I was delighted to come back home to teach! I love the small size and cultural diversity of students at NCA. It’s great to have interactions with students from all around the world. We are especially fortunate here in a small town in north central Wisconsin to have this opportunity. I also enjoy teaching at a college-prep school because most of the students are highly motivated, which makes teaching fun. What I bring to NCA is enthusiasm for teaching and a strong desire to prepare our students for success not only in college, but also in life!  My experience at UW – Marathon County gives me a clear understanding of the kinds of skills our students will need to be successful in English courses in the University of Wisconsin system. I also feel strongly that one of the most valuable skills we can teach our students is critical thinking (versus rote memorization of facts and information). This helps prepare them to be analytical problem-solvers which will benefit all areas of their lives – social, academic, and professional.

In my free time, I enjoy reading and spending time in nature. I love kayaking, canoeing, traveling, and meeting new people. I also enjoy spending quality time with family and friends.
