Kathy Ducommun, affectionately known to students as “Dr. Duke”, has brought a special combination of education, experience, and enthusiasm to the English Department at NCA. Kathy has a Bachelors, Masters and PhD in English, as well as an impressive teaching career. She developed courses and taught at Mount Senario College, University of Wisconsin, the Conserve School, and now North Cedar Academy. She also served as Dean for Academic Affairs, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, and Acting President of Mount Senario College.
Dr. Duke’s vibrant and engaging teaching Style has lead her to become a student favorite, as evidenced in the many heartfelt comments left on her whiteboard at the end of the school year…
“Thank you for what you’ve done for me this school year. You set an example for me and are my lifelong teacher and friend.”
“Thank you for your patience and your help. I learned a lot from you this year. I will miss you very much!”
“You are one of the best teachers here. We love you so much!”
At NCA, Kathy teaches English Literature and Public Speaking, along with the Composition I and II courses she developed for the University of Wisconsin. “At UW, we identified that many incoming students were not prepared to be successful with university-level English composition,” stated Kathy. “Offering these courses at NCA ensures that our students are prepared for success at the next level.”
“This year’s students were creative, witty, funny, and very hard working. When challenged they were eager to get it right,” Kathy continued. “They were a great group of students from very different cultures. It’s nice to have an international flavor here, to bring diversity to the classroom and to the area.”
